Smith เป็นเพลงที่ร่วมแต่งกับ Diane Warren (How Do I Live Without You) โดยที่เพลงนี้เคยขึ้นอันดับ 1 ใน Billboard Adult Comtemporay และอันดับ 27 ใน Billboard Hot 100 ซึ่งทำให้อัลบัมนี้มียอดขายในระดับ Platinum แต่ยังคงไม่แรงเท่ากับเพลง "Place In This World" ที่ไปไกลถึงอันดับ 6 ใน Billboard Hot 100

ในช่วงเวลาที่เขาจบจาก High School นั่นเป็นช่วงที่เขามีปัญหาติดยาและแอลกอฮอล์อย่างหนัก เขาได้เข้าเรียนที่ Marshall University ในช่วงสั้น ๆ เพื่อพัฒนาทักษะด้านการเขียนเพลง จากนั้นเขา Drop เรียนแล้วย้ายไป Nashville โดยมีเป้าหมายทำงานด้านดนตรี ในช่วงปี 1979 เป็นช่วงที่เขาได้กลับมาสู่ความเชื่อในวัยเด็กอีกครั้ง และได้เริ่มเล่น Keyboard ให้กับวงคริสเตียนที่ชื่อ Higher Ground
ในปี 1981 เขาได้เซ็นสัญญาเป็นนักแต่งเพลงให้กับ Meadowgreen Music โดยมีโอกาสเขียนเพลงฮิตให้กับ Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither และ Amy Grant และได้เริ่มเล่น Keyboard ให้กับการทัวร์ของ Grant ในอัลบัม Age to Age ในที่สุดเขาได้กลายเป็นวงเปิดให้กับ Grant และได้เริ่มทำอัลบัมของตัวเองที่ชื่อ The Michael W. Smith Project ซึ่งได้ชิง Grammy เป็นครั้งแรก อัลบัมนี้มีเพลงฮิตคือ Friends ซึ่งเขาร่วมเขียนกับ Deborah ภรรยาของเขาด้วย (ข้อมูลบางส่วนจาก Wikipedia)
